Chapter 2: The Language of Symbols(1)

 

Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not;
and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand“. (Matthew 13:13)

Thinking about it, life is pretty much conducted by symbols in many
ways. Symbols that when we see we know exactly what we are
asked to do, although their shapes do not always illustrate their
significance. Numbers are a good example. No written shape of a
number demonstrates the amount, and still, when we see a number
we know exactly how much to think of. The written letter does not
illustrate the sound that we are supposed to make when pronouncing
it, and yet we know how to read it and combine words, which also
have nothing to do with how the noun they describe looks,
nevertheless when we read a noun we know what the object looks
like. Notes are also symbols. If we know how to read them, we know
exactly which key to push, although there are not specific instructions
for that. Road signs, if we obey them, make us go through the
required series of actions, although these actions are not detailed but
only by a sign that looks this way or another....
